Our Philosophy
Our approach is to work with both students and teachers to understand the unique challenges and the activities that will benefit each individual student. The student work sessions include content review, focus on study, organizational and test taking skills, and building student confidence.

Students We've Helped
- A teacher in the HVS system nominated a student who was failing in his senior year due to some troubling issues in his home life. Through a series of meetings with a mentor the student began to respond to their one on one meetings with a better work ethic and sense of purpose at school every day. By the end of the school year the student had turned his failing grades into all As and Bs and would graduate on time.
- A counselor requested assistance for a freshman student who was struggling due to some health issues and her many absences due to her health. One on one attention from a teacher during lunch hour every week assisted her in understanding she needed to advocate for herself and proactively seek assistance. This student will continue to work on these issues next year as a sophomore.
- A parent asked for our assistance with a student who was struggling with testing skills, particularly in her Algebra and Biology classes. Focusing on study skills and basic test preparation tactics seemed to be key factors in helping that student realize better test results! In working closely with this particular student, Mrs. Dabney also identified some basic level knowledge in a few areas that seemed to be missing, so that became a focus of their sessions as well.
- Another student needed assistance in working through the writing process. She was struggling with a major writing project assignment in her English class. Sessions with Mrs. Dabney resulted in a well written paper that showed improvement, and impressed her teacher! This student also received tutoring services to assist with testing skills.
- An english teacher recommended a student participate in our program because she was having difficulty with reading comprehension, and in pulling important information from her extensive research to form an outline. Mrs. Dabney also found that this student needed help to keep her thoughts organized when writing. The skills and tactics learned by the student during her weekly tutor sessions were applied to several papers for a few different classes, and a slow but steady improvement was noted with each effort!
